PA State Budget in Final Negotiation

Release Date: June 6, 2012

On June 5, 2012, Pennsylvania state House members voted on amendments to the state Senate budget (SB1466).
An amendment introduced by Representative Phyllis Mundy (D-Luzerne), who co-chairs the ECE Caucus, to restore $15.52 million for Child Care Services ($8.72 million for Keystone STARS, $4.8 million to revive the TEACH Scholarship program and $2 million for child care subsidies) passed unanimously!
Representative Tom Murt (R-Montgomery) also introduced a similar amendment to restore funding for early childhood education, but it was not voted on by House members.
This is good news, although the budget is not entirely done. Now Representative Mundy’s amendment must stand the test of negotiations between the Governor, and House and Senate caucus leaders. Take a moment to reach out and thank House members today as the budget moves into final negotiations this week:
  • Send Representative Mundy (email or Facebook) and Representative Murt (email or Facebook) a quick note to thank them for their leadership in seeking to restore cuts to quality early childhood education.
  • Thank your House member for voting on Rep. Mundy’s amendment (you can see who voted here) and encourage them to talk to their caucus leaders to support the restoration of funding for child care subsidy, Keystone STARS and TEACH Scholarship in the final budget.
We are almost there – legislators are looking to finish the budget by June 13th
